"...Hell, it’s been a long time since I last updated you all, I think the last time I wrote I was still working on the vehicle up in Scotland. Well all that work has completed (extra fuel tank, new shocks and springs new bushes all round and a new clutch have been fitted...."

July 19th - 30th 2000

"...I awoke to find a Mozzie had bitten me on the eyelid during the night. I looked like the “Hunch Back of Notre Dame” and on a bad day at that. I would have taken a picture of myself but because of another mozzie bite to my elbow it was rather painful to hold the camera at arm’s length..."

July 30th - August 13th 2000 "...Put on my Archaeologist hat for the day. Went to Aspendos to see the Amphitheatre. It’s the best example of a Roman Amphitheatre in Asia minor, or so the sign said. I must admit it was in a better condition than the one in Ephesus, though not as big..."

August 23rd Email

"...230 Kms through the desert again and into Damascus, which is where I'm sending this from. Also a very friendly place. I immediately made
friends with the local Land Rover dealer, and his friend an airline pilot who took me out to see the sights of Damascus..."

August 13th - August 30th 2000

"...What a place! And a real treat for the senses, brightly coloured clothes and fabrics stacked to the ceiling, gold and silver jewelry filling shop windows. The smell of spices, tea and coffee filling the air, and the shouts of hawkers and barrow boys coming from every corner..."

September 3rd Email "...I'm in Aqaba (Jordan) at the moment. Have met up with a Dutch couple. (Mike and Peggy) They're shipping to Mombassa (Kenya) at the end of the month, and I have decided to share a container with them, which will save us both quite a lot of money..."

1 - 15 September 2000 "...Bloody sore! But the floating experience is wonderful. You’re so buoyant, that it’s impossible to swim. You just have to lie on your back and bob around..."

15th - 30th September 2000

"...Woke at 2.30am having had a very vivid dream. I was shouting at a non-existent guy climbing up the back ladder of my truck! Jurg said he thought I was listening to the radio and was getting a bit excited about some Olympic results!..."

October 2000  The container was huge. We had calculated that with our two cars and Mike’s tent on the floor we should have had 1 metre left, but there was enough room to get another Landy inside. I don’t think they do 60 ft containers, but I’m sure it was bigger than 40ft.
November 2000  We’d spent 2 days and 2 nights on the boat and it was fantastic. A lifetime’s ambition finally realised, and every bit as dreamlike as I’d hoped for. A couple of days that will stay with me for the rest of mine.
December 2000 "...At the top we had a cup of tea, sat on Maggies roof, and “soaked” it all in. It was wonderful, and as Bill said
“One of those moments I’ll look back on knowing I don’t have a care in the world”..."
January 2001 "...Just as I put my head on the pillow I heard a hyena chuckling away somewhere in the bush..."
May 2001 "...Oh yes, this bit is not for the squeamish!  I went off down to the river looking for some firewood. I was scrambling down some rocks when I felt something prick the sole of my foot. I tried to back up, but it was too late..."

June 2001 "... May improve my fuel economy a bit. Speaking of which I’ve gained on average another 1-2 km/ltr since driving barefoot!!  Think it may please Maggie, after all you wouldn’t caress a woman with gloves on would you?"

August 2001

Initially there’s something in the back of your mind that’s pushing you to keep going and going and going, but it’s not the way to travel. I soon learnt that if you push yourself too much you don’t enjoy it, you become tired and apathetic to all the things around you. You’re just travelling for travels sake. It almost turns into a race. OK, I eventually want to get from Cape Town to Cairo, but that’s not the main reason for doing the trip. I’ve come to experience Africa.

September 2001 Did some fishing with Nick then decided to pop into town to watch a football match. It was a great laugh. We picked up a few beers en-route (essential) and headed off to the village green. The locals are very keen on their football. A Tree in the middle of the pitch, and a pitch invasion by 70 cattle made for an unforgettable afternoon on the terraces

Wendy arrives to-day and I need to have a good tidy up. Got to make at least a good impression. Spent all day washing and cleaning and scrubbing. A passing back packer comments – ‘Expecting female company?’
November 2001 Up at 5:30 am to go sea fishing. It was a great day out. We caught 24 tuna – ranging from 6 to 16 kgs. I lost a sail fish which is rather disappointing to say the least.
Conclusion A word of thanks...
